The Central Valley's Next Generation of Biotech Scientists Are Training in Turlock
Turlock, CA (11/06/2026) — Stanislaus State students are gaining hands-on research experience that could help prepare them for careers in the Central Valley's emerging biotechnology and biomanufacturing industries.
The University recently dedicated the Dr. James Youngblom Center for Sustainable Biotechnology, where students are conducting research with potential applications in health, nutrition and other fields. Among them is Modesto graduate student Xochitl Ramirez, who is studying ways to increase the production of compounds in algae that could be used in omega-3 supplements.
The center also has a compelling mentorship story. It's named for the professor who encouraged a former student to pursue scientific research. That student, Tricia Van Laar, is now a Stan State professor helping prepare the next generation of scientists.
Together, these stories offer a local perspective on biotechnology workforce development, research opportunities and the connections between higher education and emerging Central Valley industries.
