Stanislaus State Daybook - 2023 Commencement Edition

Turlock, CA (05/27/2023) — Stanislaus State celebrated its Class of 2023 graduates during the University's Commencement ceremonies. For the 2022-23 academic year, Stanislaus State recognized 2,988 graduates and 373 credential recipients during four Commencement ceremonies held Thursday, May 25, and Friday, May 26. The in-person festivities were also live-streamed on YouTube.

With hundreds of proud parents, family members, friends and supporters cheering excitedly for graduates, Stanislaus State honored its Class of 2023 Thursday, May 25, during the first two of three Commencement ceremonies held in the University Amphitheater.

Stanislaus State's final Commencement ceremony for the Class of 2023 ended in spectacular fashion on Friday, May 26, with celebratory cheers, joyful tears, inspirational speeches and a standing ovation for retiring President Ellen Junn.

Father and son Norm and Evan Porges have earned many accolades over the years for being pioneering entrepreneurs, engaged community leaders and generous philanthropists. For decades, they have worked to uplift the Central Valley and its inhabitants by championing the transformative power of higher education, acts of public service and giving back to the community. On Thursday, May 25, the duo added another commendation to the list: honorary doctorate. The California State University (CSU) and Stanislaus State conferred their highest honor, the Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters, to the Porgeses during the University's Commencement ceremony for the College of Business Administration and the College of Education, Kinesiology and Social Work. The Porgeses made history CSU history as the first father and son to be jointly conferred with honorary doctorates.

Established in 1970 by Lee Metzger and joined by the Geiger family in 1999, the Metzger-Geiger Award honors the graduating Stanislaus State undergraduate students with the highest grade-point average. The Class of 2023 has eight students graduating with perfect 4.0 grade-point averages. Read their stories.

Gianna Nunes of Hilmar is the Class of 2023 J. Burton Vasche Award winner. The award honors a student who displays the highest standards of leadership, cooperation, participation, service and scholarship.

Every year, faculty and staff nominate a group of graduates to be honored as StanGrads and the graduates have the opportunity to tell the stories of their educational journeys.
